Vacancies for group leaders

We are looking for junior or senior tenure track group leaders. Our new colleague will contribute to the aims of one or more of our four strategic research themes. The vacancies will be online soon.

About Sanquin Research

Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation uniquely combines medical, diagnostic, blood bank and research activities. With 2,000 committed colleagues and 400,000 blood donors, we contribute to the treatment of over 300,000 patients each year.

The Department of Research of Sanquin is home to 200 researchers and technicians, including around 80 PhD students. Most of our group leaders are affiliated with one of the Dutch universities. Research at Sanquin is organized in four strategic themes: Anemia, Bleeding & Hemostasis, Immunity & Inflammation, and Immunotherapy. The mission of research at Sanquin is to invent/develop novel methods and approaches using blood cells and blood products to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure disease in donors and patients. Research activities cover the full spectrum of early inventions, development into novel products and services, donor studies, and clinical studies in patients.

Our research labs are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including flow cytometry and cell sorting, macromolecular mass spectrometry and proteomics, and imaging. Sanquin is strategically located in Amsterdam.

Our four strategic themes

Anemia
We aim to improve blood transfusion by supporting donor health and behavior. We investigate the production of cultured blood for various therapeutic purposes, and develop cost-effective production of erythrocytes in bioreactors. We aim to reduce the need of transfusion for chronically anemic patients and its adverse events, by finding alternative treatments. Read more

Bleeding and Hemostasis
We aim to improve diagnosis and treatment of patients with congenital and/or acquired hemostatic disorders. We study the biology of megakaryocytes, blood platelets and coagulation factors with the overall aim of further improving omics-guided approaches for restoring hemostasis in patients suffering from bleeding symptoms/disorders. Read more

Immunity and Inflammation
We investigate immune responses to develop novel diagnostics, targeted therapies and personalized medicine, to prevent unwanted side effects from transfusion of blood cells or products. This includes structural and functional characterization of plasma proteins such as antibodies and complement, and elucidating how immune cells involved in these responses cause tissue damage, organ dysfunction and/or blood cell destruction. Read more

Immunotherapy
Cellular therapies have proven effective to fight infections and cancer. We study immune cell differentiation, function and control, with a focus on T cells, B cells, innate lymphoid cells and neutrophils. We seek to obtain fundamental understanding of immune cell differentiation to develop innovative cellular products, that are clinically implemented in the Sanquin Laboratory of Cell Therapy and by strong ties with (academic) hospitals. Read more

What we are looking for

We are particularly interested in group leaders who can strengthen our efforts in the fields of cell and gene therapy to correct and cure hematological disorders, antibody or protein engineering, data science to successfully integrate clinical and large data-sets in the area of transfusion medicine, and donor health.

Our offer

We offer a tenure-track position in a collaborative and international - academically oriented - research environment with state of-the-art equipment. We provide an appropriate start-up package to start a research group and will support efforts to acquire external funding to expand your group.

Applying

If you are interested in these positions, please  subscribe to our vacancy alerts or contact prof Gerald de Haan, scientific director, for more specific information.

When applying to our vacancies online we will ask you for an extended CV, before the 15 August 2025, and an outline of the contribution you expect to be able to make towards our research program (max 2 pages)
