Official start EU Twinning project in Georgia

On September 17th 2020, after 6 months delay due to COVID-19 lock down measures, the formal kickoff meeting for the EU twinning project ‘Strengthening Blood Safety System in Georgia’ took place in Tbilisi (Georgia).

In this EU Twinning project, Sanquin Consulting Services as mandated body collaborates with a Lithuanian partner. Representatives of the two member states work together with Georgian counterparts to strengthen the blood supply system, in order to be able to comply with EU directives.

The four pillars of the project are:

  • translation of the EU directives in national legislation;
  • reorganization of the blood system (blood supply as well as government oversight);
  • introduction of voluntary non-remunerated donation;
  • realization of capacity for the system.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic most of the activities in the project, which usually happen on location, had to be scheduled online. So far, Sanquin experts and the Lithuanian and Georgian partners have contributed to make the legislation comply with EU regulations. Together we are establishing a well-organized and nationally coordinated blood supply system.
