Horizon 2020 grant for Complement Research into Factor H-protein family

We are happy to announce that the Sanquin Complement research group of Ilse Jongerius takes part in the European Horizon 2020 FET open project SciFiMed.

Sanquin is one of eight European partners from four different countries that work together on the project named SciFiMed, which aims to develop a new biosensor-based diagnosis technique to help better characterize inflammatory reactions in the body.

The Research focuses on complement factor H and related proteins, regulators of the immune system. They play a decisive role in the development of systemic and organ-specific diseases, such as chronic kidney diseases, bacterial infections and macular degeneration, an eye disease.

By examining both functional activity and the amount of all of the seven targeted protein family members in the patient sample, the consortium aims to determine the influence of these proteins on the development of diseases, thereby improving diagnosis and therapy of various types of inflammatory diseases.
