Abstract
Cristina Pina is a clinically-trained scientist researching regulation of cell identity in the blood system. She is interested in epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of self-renewal and differentiation, in particular the way in which variability in transcriptional activity is harnessed in cell fate choices. In the last few years, Cristina has been developing 3D models of blood development with which she aims to reconstruct sequential steps of blood specification and stem cell formation, and directly interrogate the role of transcriptional variability and epigenetic regulation in acquisition and maintenance of stem and progenitor cell identity. Cristina’s research has direct implications for the success of blood cell replacement strategies. Furthermore, her investigation enables biological understanding and molecular targeting of paediatric forms of leukaemia with a developmental origin.
