Vici career grant for Klaas van Gisbergen

Sanquin researcher Klaas van Gisbergen received a Vici grant from the Dutch Health Research Council (ZonMW). With this grant of 1.5 milion euro Klaas will be able to perform a five year pioneering research project.

Klaas submitted his proposal on â€˜Immunological memory of tissues’. T-cells are crucial for immune defense to protect against re-infection and tumor challenge. This project aims to understand how T-cells develop and function in the tumor microenvironment. The gained knowledge will contribute to the development of therapies employing these T cells in combatting cancer.

The Vici grant allows laureates the develop in five years their own innovative research line and to establish their own research group. Vici is one of the major career grants in the Netherlands and is meant for established investigators.

Klaas: "It is a great honor to receive this Vici-grant. With my research group, I hope to be able to make real progression towards a better treatment for cancer patients. I'm very enthousiastic that we are now in a position to do this project."
